Family correspondence, 1856,1872.

Family correspondence, 1856-1858, 1861-1872, undated. Most of the letters are from Selina's parents to Selina, concerning family health and hard times on the farm. Also included are Civil War letters from her brother, Benjamin J. Clark, who served in Company H, First Michigan Cavalary, 1862-1865. A brief overview of the collection, highlighting the Civil War letters, is in the front of the first folder. Also included is a note (copy) from Kathy Lutz (donor and great-grandaughter of Selina and Peter) to Mr. Floyd Dain, giving a brief family tree. The service record (copy) of Benjamin Clark is also included.

Dain was born Nov. 20, 1910. He earned an A.B. and a M.A., both in history and both from Wayne State University (WSU). During World War II he served as a communications officer in the U.S. Navy. Dain taught in Detroit Public Schools for 29 years and as a special instructor at WSU for 15 years. Dain was hired as an administrative assistant at Clarke Historical Library at Central Michigan University (CMU) in 1966. Selina and her husband, Peter Warden, moved to Milan Township (Washtenaw County, Mich.) from N.Y. (State). They were farmers . Together they had four children: Alonzo, Adelia, Fred, and Frank. Kathy Lutz is descended from Frank's first daugther, Ruth Bollinger. (Information from the collection.) Benjamin J. Clark enlisted and was mustered on Sept. 27, 1861 at Unadilla (Mich.).
